bamboo is a lot more durable, long lasting, long wearing and cost friendly and it's cheaper than traditional wood. You could also have polished concrete which can look great, too.

I'm looking to remodel my basement within the next 3 months or so, and I've been pondering the same question. Unfortunately, with the threat of water and flooding in my neighborhood as well, I've resorted to going with tile in my basement, in the case such problems arise with water.
With tile, you can always spruce up the room easily with carpet and throw rugs.
I'm not sure your thoughts on vinyl flooring, but this site would be a great resource if you are interested in going in this direction with flooring your basement.

If you are ever considering changing up the floor in other rooms/areas of your house, there are great bamboo and cork flooring on that site as well that would give such a unique look!
Hope this helps!

For a low cost – Skip the flooring! Kids can have fun in the basement this way, and even use chalk on the floor to play hop scotch. A throw down rug can be placed in play or sitting areas.
Vinyl and then laminate flooring are your lowest dollar floor coverings.
Tile http://www.homeplansforfree.com/Free-bathroom-designs/thumbnails.php?album=18 is an alternative flooring option which is more popular in bathroom areas.
Wishing you the best!
